Canelé and Brotzéit makes a great nightout!

Can't remember when was the last gathering, but the 4 of us were finally able to have a proper meet-up. We decided, or rather I decided to try out Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie at Raffles City.

My Darlings! Valerie, Gret and Ben!

Canelé, great food awaits.

(Clockwise from top) Salade concorde, Corn & crab chowder, Smoked salmon, red tomato, capers & dill cream cheese crepe and Bolognaise & poached egg with parmesan cheese doria

The food at Canelé has quite a strong taste, using lots of sauces, spices and such. Not really suitable for those with a blander preference. Personal favorite will have to be the Corn & crab chowder. It's smooth and rich, but not too thick. You can actually taste small pieces of sweet corn and crab meat. This will probably ranked 2nd as my no. 1 favorite is still the Cream of mushroom from Marché.

Sad to say, I find the salad a little too bland, the doria a little too salty and the crust of the crepe a little too thin. But the smoked salmon on the crepe is pretty good, and all the veges are very crispy.

Next comes desserts!! Heavenly dessert is the grand finale of a delicious meal, so I was looking forward to it, especially when Canelé is famous for its dessert. Was I impressed? Well, yes and no.

(Clockwise from top) Triple choco cheesecake, Cafe caramel, Macaron and Tiramisu

Attention: The tiramisu is definitely a MUST TRY! The Italian classic with finger sponge soaked in coffee, white rum and brandy. Soft and smooth and melts in your mouth. Heavenly!

Okay, back to the rest of the desserts. Let's see, the cheesecake is quite nice, the cafe caramel is too chocolaty and the macarons are too sweet, but the passion fruit one is pretty unique.

Remains of the desserts.. One look and you know which is the popular one.

Salad, soup, main course, desserts.. what's next? Biru (beer) of course! Off we go to Brotzéit!

Good food, heavenly desserts, cold chilled beer and great company, what more can I ask for? Cheers, guys!

Fast forwarded 2 days..

I brought my friends, Jack Jo and Mervyn to try out the desserts at Canelé.

(Clockwise from top) Cheesecake, Chocolat classique, Meringue and Gateau chocolat

Verdict: Too much sweet and chocolate is bad for health. I still prefer my tiramisu.

A different singing experience

Forget about kbox and partyworld, Top One is the place to be! It is opposite Bugis Junction and beside Ritz apple strudel. My friends and I went k-ing yesterday afternoon. I must admit, the first impression wasn't too good. The passage towards the lift was hot and dark. A waiter was pushing a trolley full of leftovers out when the lift door opened; both the smell and the sight was awful. Not to mention we have to endure it till the 3rd floor. Even though there is a air freshener in the lift, it doesn't seem to be working. If it IS working, it definitely isn't working well!

Luckily the ambiance of the room made up for all that. If I'm correct, every floor has its own theme. For level 3, I think it is BLACK and PURPLE and FLOWERS. The wallpaper is made up of symmetrical big purple flower patterns.

Since they ran out of small rooms, lucky us gotten a big one despite only having 4 people. There is a small stage at the corner, well-equipped with lights and a tall chair. I tried singing on stage and it feels like having a mini unplugged concert! Plus they have special effects for lightings - bright, soft, laser for the stage and flashing disco lights! Plus plus, they even have the smoke effect! (Warning: There is a LOT of smoke and it smells like vanilla.)

The song system here is not your usual remote control. Instead, they have a complicated-looking machine in front of the stage. Don't be scare off by its looks, this machine is actually pretty simple to operate. After playing around for a while, you should be able to get the hang of it. (Warning: This is NOT a touch screen. I repeat, this is NOT a touch screen.)

Not knowing what to expect, I went ahead to the play with a group of female colleagues anyway. With a stellar cast of 9 women, The Vagina Monologues (TVM) is a collection of anecdotes celebrating all things feminine - from a woman's own spiels on her own hair “down there” to a clinical “vagina workshop” which is re-imagined as an army bootcamp led by a drill sergeant with a French accent and out of nowhere, someone actually does a sexy pole dance. Naughty, naughty!

Of course, this play isn't all about fun and laughter. From spousal violence to childhood sexual abuse, TVM also portrays the dark and afflict side of being a woman. But I personally find some moments rather disturbing and depressing.

Having said that, it is interesting to see that there is a conscious effort to localise the experience, with phrases in Tamil, Malay and Chinese dialects thrown around. There is also an attempt to draw the audience closer to the cast - with a bunch of “schoolgirls” descending on the audience waving their (unused) sanitary napkins and a tight and snappy lesson on how to pronounced “c**t”. There are of course many more witty and hilarious scenes, however there are 2 which stood out.

One would be that of a dignified old lady recounting her first sexual awakening. Too shy to even say the word “vagina”, she flashes a “V” sign instead. Now, I'm inclined to give the “V” sign a new and fresh definition. Another one would be that of a sex worker whose clientele are only women. The "butch" being quite attractive is definitely a plus point. However, it is the comedic depiction of the various ways of moaning that makes me laugh.

My old eyes

Was looking at my own reflection in the train on my way to work today. Suddenly realised there is no sparks in my eyes. And they look kind of old. So sad..

Prelude to "The Vagina Monologues"

Being a fan of the arts - dance, music, theatre - I have visited the Esplanade umpteen times for countless of performances.

From the Concert Hall for big musical performances..

To the Recital Studio for solo recitals or jazz concerts..

From the Theatre Studio for plays..

To the Rehearsal Studio for dance classes..

And this Friday, I will be visiting the Drama Centre Theatre for the play - "The Vagina Monologues". I hope it's good, both the venue and the play.

Life wasted.

The day is coming to an end soon. Another week gone by just like that. Time passes pretty fast this year. It's already October. Then November and come December, we will be busy sending off 2008 and welcoming another brand new year.

Sometimes I wonder, what am I doing wasting my life like this? Life is so uninteresting. Nothing interests me anymore. I'm slowly eroding away. Sound so sad. What the heck?

What am I thinking? What am I feeling? I don't know. Lost perhaps. Or perhaps just purposely wallowing in misery? I don't know. Don't want to think. Don't want to feel. Don't want to do anything.

What the heck am I doing sounding so sad? Haiz.

One daughter. One mom. Three possible dads.

Hilarious, fun and wicked! Mama Mia is definitely a MUST WATCH! Handsome men, gorgeous women, enchanting Greece scenery (the beach is darn beautiful!) and good ol' ABBA songs! Who can resist?

AND I LOVE MUSICALS!! Singing, dancing, everything!

Coffee, tea or Me?

Finally met up with Gret and Valerie for high tea @ Goodwood Park's L'espresso. It's traditional English high tea with scones and muffins. The food selection isn't that many, but it's all about the quality. For a lazy afternoon of good food, soothing music and great company, $39 per pax is okay. But each person is only limited to 2 choices of drinks.

Good ol' English plates and cups. Very pretty.

Too bad I wasn't able to try the scones and creme brulee. Spent too much time talking with the girls. It's said to be heavenly. Nvm, an excuse for me to go back again. Heh.

Gret and I.

Valerie and I.

Us, yellow green and red. =)

Thank you girls, for giving me such a wonderful time on a otherwise hot and boring afternoon! Love ya!
