Need a plastic bag?

Starting from 18 April, every 1st Wednesday of the month will be Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) Day. Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own shopping bag and use lesser plastic bags. Shoppers without own shopping bags will be charged 10 cents per plastic bag upon requested.

Plastic bags are non-biodegradable, bringing harm to the environment. It kills about 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles every year around the world (Today, 20 Apr).

But how well will this campaign be? Will it last? I'm skeptical about it.

True that this year's response is better compared to last year, but there are still many who are not bothered. Besides, the shopping bags are kind of small for bulky items and for those who purchase a lot.

Harmful as they are, plastic bags can still be reuse as bin liners. Without them, how do you throw away wet trash such as leftover food in the sink?

What's your stand on this?
