My dance journey..

Was watching So You Think You Can Dance 2 just now. It's amazing how some people cannot differentiate between dancing n moving their bodies. It's painful to watch some contestants do their moves without following the music at all. It's like they cannot sense the rhythm of the music. Some of the contestants claimed to be dance instructors for goodness sake, but they can't dance AT ALL! Dancing (to me..) means you need to listen n feel the music, be able to sense the rhythm n let your moves flow with it. Moving your body, on the other hand, simply means moving your body.

This reminds me when I just started learning salsa. Most of my friends were rather surprised. They don't see me, or rather I don't portrait myself as the dancing type, especially not sensual dance like salsa. Anyway, I guess I was pretty much inspired by the movie Dirty Dancing 2. I was attracted to the way they moved their bodies, sexy and with so much passion. I still remembered the first time I went to union. Being a newbie to salsa, I was conscious about my footwork, timing n everything. I just stay outside the dance floor, exciting yet afraid to take the first step. My very first dance was with my instructor. After that, all was magical. Once you started, you don't want to stop.

It's been 8 months since I started my salsa journey. I realised dancing not only makes you look good; it makes you understand n appreciate your body. Each n every move requires co-ordination. That's why u need to understand and appreciate your body in order to groove with style. Dancing also makes you open up to others.

When the man leads his lady on the dancefloor, he not only leads her. He gives her respect by leading her well. He brings her onto a journey, not merely steps.
When the lady follows her man well, she is not just following him. She accepts him and gives him trust for bringing her onto a journey, even if it's just 5 minutes. She respects herself by giving himself and herself that confidence to dance.

What I've also learnt is Don't think, Just dance. Just really enjoy the music. Feel the rhythm translate into your heartbeat. Feel it with your heart and you will enjoy dancing, even if your footwork is not as good. It's ok to make mistakes here and there. What's important is to really enjoy yourself.

There's still so much more to learn n explore. Let my journey continue...
